Eat, drink and be merry this Christmas!

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire: a classic Christmas scene, thanks to Nat King Cole’s The Christmas Song. But traditions evolve – and today we’re more likely to be digging in to a tin of Quality Street on the sofa, than toasting chestnuts around a log fire. That said; there are some festive food traditions that stand the test of time. Mince pies, mulled wine, turkey, ham, ‘pigs-in-blankets’, cranberry sauce, the cheese board, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake… and your family’s customary way of reinventing the turkey (in our house, it’s pie or soup). At the New Street Butchers & Deli, we are proud to say that we can fill your Christmas pantry with festive delights. Roasts & cold cuts Our free-range turkeys and hams are incredibly popular – orders roll in thick-and-fast throughout November. If your preference is beef, lamb, pork, or game, we can ensure you have the finest for your Christmas table, along with tasty handmade chipolatas wrapped in our 12-day cured bacon. Festive flavours Our deli, now into its second year of business, is well stocked with all the little extras that conjure the flavours and scents of the season. For the run-up to Christmas, we have homemade mincemeat, mince pies and lots of tipples and nibbles. And for the main event, the Christmas dinner,  we have goose fat for perfectly crisped roasties, an array of stuffings, cranberry sauce, redcurrant jelly, bread sauce, beautiful fresh gravies, and our homemade Christmas puds. Our special Christmas chutney is the perfect complement to a slice of cold ham. A glass of Bolney bubbly teams up beautifully with a slice of Italian Panettone. Christmas dinner ends sublimely with a platter of tangy, locally produced cheeses. We’ve thought long and hard about how to make your Christmas taste sensational – and we reckon we have every seasonal indulgence covered! Foodie gifts If you’re seeking the perfect gift for someone that appreciates the best foods, then you’re in the right place. Hampers and boxes cost £5 and can be filled with anything that tickles your fancy, from fine cheeses and liqueurs to chocolates and shortbread. Our raspberry vodka is lip-smacking stuff, our macarons are so pretty, and our Hepworth Christmas ale and gift packs are a beer lover’s dream. Please come and browse our shelves, which are bursting with delicious local produce. Family food to savour together Christmas isn’t Christmas without the evocative flavours and fragrances we enjoy year after year. For festive family food that you can savour together at this happy time, trust us. We’re delighted to play a part in making your Christmas truly special.  ...

Old Fashioned Food & the Whiff of Nostalgia

Posted on Oct 21, 2014 in Homemade, In the butchers, In the deli | 0 comments

Have you noticed how good, old-fashioned food is making a comeback? A ‘real food’ revolution began a few years back, when the recession refocussed families on cooking from scratch, rather than spending a fortune on expensive ready meals. Real food also gets the seal of approval from nutritionists who are rightly sceptical of low-fat, high sugar foods, and those with lots of ingredients most people would struggle to pronounce. As we increasingly worry what’s in processed foods, it can only be a good thing to keep things simple. Fresh ingredients, and less of them, means we know what we eat! But apart from money and health concerns, why are we making for ‘vintage classic’ recipes? The answer is: nostalgia! Flavours and aromas that remind us of granny’s kitchen offer a wonderful sense of comfort. What did your nan make when you were a kid? Steak & kidney pudding? Spotted dick? Can’t you just taste it even as you think back? Don’t you feel warm and cosy and safe casting your mind back to those times? If time pressure is the only thing keeping you from the wonderfully reassuring foods of yesteryear, then New Street Butchers has the answer.  We are making old favourites like steak & kidney pudding, bacon puddings and faggots, by hand, using our own simple, family recipes (probably very similar to your gran’s). We even do the onion gravy to go with them! If you really want to step back in time, we also sell pig cheek, ox cheek and ox tail, cuts that are undergoing a bit of a ‘fashion’ moment right now. You can find simple recipes to cook these  meats. Check out Nigel Slater’s books, as he’s a fan… He describes pigs cheeks as “plump, unctuous porcine cushions that fall apart on your fork”. He continues, “Cheeks are as good-natured a cut as you will find, calmly doing their own thing in a low oven, slowly edging their way towards tenderness. An occasional stir, a turn or two, that is all they need. Oh, and a lid, they must have a lid, to stop them drying out and the cooking liquor evaporating.” If you’re hankering for flavours from your past, come on by to New Street Butchers and let us take you back in...

Say hello to… Hebridean Liqueur Company

Posted on Jul 18, 2014 in In the deli | 0 comments

At New Street Butchers & Deli, the search for fantastic UK suppliers is an ongoing passion. We are delighted when we come across a company that’s as dedicated to high quality food and drink craftsmanship as we are. I want to introduce some of our suppliers to you though this blog, starting with Bill from Hebridean Liqueurs. Bill runs a small family business in Helensburgh in Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland. He blends the highest quality liqueurs and spirits, which are so special that they are attracting attention worldwide. He is devoted to creating new and interesting flavours and providing a sensational drinking experience. At New Street Butchers, we stock a number of Hebridean Liqueur Company’s specialities, which each have their own story. Here are some of the highlights of the collection: William Shakespeare’s Whisky Liqueur The recipe for this whisky liqueur harks back to Shakespeare’s day when whisky was mixed with oranges and caramel, giving it a tangy flavour and a smooth finish. The liqueur is packaged in an antique style bottle, with a copy of William Shakespeare’s Last Will & Testament wrapped around the bottle neck.  Hebridean Whisky Liqueur Each bottle of Hebridean Liqueur is filled by hand, stopped with a special tapered cork, and finished with a distinctive black wax seal. Historically, Scotch whisky was mixed with either orange juice or burnt sugar-caramel. With a recipe inspired by this, Hebridean Whisky Liqueur has a subtle caramel flavour, with a hint of spice. Lord Nelson’s Spiced Rum Liqueur This rum liqueur recalls the flavours of the Caribbean, where Admiral Lord Nelson spent many years of service. A blend of rich caramel and spices results in a luxuriously smooth flavour. It’s perfect for savouring after dinner, or enjoying splashed over ice for a refreshing aperitif.  Ancient Mariner London Dry Gin Inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s haunting poem ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, this smooth London-made gin is made from 100% British grain has a lovely Juniper aroma. Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean. Water, water, every where, And all the boards did shrink; Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink… If you fancy trying a drop or two of something tasty & different, Hebridean Liqueurs and Spirits come highly recommended by New Street Butchers and Deli. The delightful flavours make them an ideal after-dinner drink, while the distinctive bottles are perfect gifts for the hard-to-buy-for man in your...
